Occupy Berkeley Given Notice from City

This Monday, Occupy Berkeley was given a notice from Jim Hynes, assistant to the city manager of Berkeley, that the rules of the Civic Center Park include no overnight camping, no tents, no open flames, etc. (original notice shown below). This notice is not a formal eviction notice, but may be a sign of a future eviction notice.

Today, at the city council meeting, the city council heard concerns regarding the Occupation’s situation and has scheduled for the topic to come up on the November 8th and November 15th council agendas.

  1. No overnight camping? In Berkeley? My daughter attends Cal, and the police in Berkeley are extremely tolerant of the huge numbers of people who spend the night outside every night!!! How can a protest movement be shut down when 24/7 outdoor campers are not? Absurd!!

  2. I and my comrades have had over a dozen sleep-outs in Berkeley, two in Provo Park, the last lasting 28 days and getting the City to agree to a rain shelter for Berkeley’s Homeless. The thing to watch out for is that City Manager Phil Kamlarz is retiring Nov.30 and his replacement might try to get a reputation with rough action. Always keep the lead by making agreements that this, this, and this will be done for this, this, this Remember, when everyone goes home. The homeless are still out there.Get something for them.
